Heald has installed its perimeter security products at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne, Australia, in partnership with Australian distributor GK Solutions.

63 APEX shallow mount bollards, three removable APEX bollards and 22 manually operated EVO bollards have been installed to enhance protection at the historic site.

Shrine of Remembrance

The Shrine of Remembrance sees over 100,000 visitors gather on ANZAC Day alone, in addition to year-round local and international tourism.

The historic site was identified as a high-risk location following a previously failed terrorist plot targeting the ANZAC Day commemorations.

The Shrine project is part of a broader security initiative led by the City of Melbourne, the State Government and the Shrine Memorial Trust.

After engaging specialist consultants, a detailed HVM strategy was developed and put to tender, with Heald’s products selected based on performance, suitability and cost-effectiveness.

APEX bollards were chosen for their shallow-mount design and minimal excavation – ideal for areas with underground services and where soil disturbance should be avoided due to potential contamination.

The EVO bollards were selected for their manual operation; while the main APEX bollards are fixed, the three removable units create additional openings when needed.

The EVO bollards are IWA crash-tested to stop a 7.2-tonne truck travelling at 64 kph (40 mph) and the APEX bollards have been crash-tested as an array of three to withstand the same impact.

In one location that required a bespoke approach, GK Solutions engaged with a structural engineering firm, and in collaboration with Heald, a reinforced design was developed and approved by the client’s engineers to meet security standards.
