Heald has released its new Electromechanical (EM) Viper hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) solution.

Adding to the company’s Viper range – which includes the Viper Shallow-Mounted Road Blocker – the new system is designed to provide robust vehicle access control in high-risk locations.

EM Viper from Heald

According to an announcement published by the Yorkshire-based manufacturer, the new EM Viper requires a shallow excavation depth of only 380mm to 460mm.

This removes the need for a precast pit and simplifies the installation process.

Designed for long-term performance in challenging environments, the EM Viper features a hot-dip galvanised steel base for corrosion resistance.

It also includes multiple ducting and drainage connection points for flexibility in site integration.

Moreover, a sacrificial skirt design is said to reduce debris collection and provide easy access for maintenance – highlighting its low-maintenance credentials.

Certified and tested

The EM Viper is certified to both PAS 68 and ASTM standards as a single unit, ensuring maximum security across variable opening widths.

It achieved zero penetration in crash tests and remained fully operational post-impact without requiring repairs. Internal linkage bars are also engineered to protect drive mechanisms during impact.

The EM Viper also delivers rapid response capabilities, achieving full deployment in 1.5 seconds with Emergency Fast Operation (EFO) and has proven reliability through 600,000-cycle test (200,000 independent test certification). Additional benefits include:

  • Energy-efficient electromechanical operation
  • Minimal roadside cabinet requirements
  • Compatibility with Heald’s modular Hydra system
  • The ability to customise appearance

“We’re always constantly innovating”

“Given the popularity of our range of Viper solutions, it only made sense for us to design and manufacture an electromechanical version to add to the range,” commented Debbie Heald MBE, Managing Director, Heald.

“In recent years, we’ve received more demand from customers for energy-efficient products to support reducing environmental impact and achieving green-led goals in public realms and high-profile locations.

“Not only this, but we’re always constantly innovating at Heald, striving to develop the best-performing HVM solutions in the market, and we’re proud to be able to offer the EM Viper to our customers.”
